|Are you getting enough sleep? |
At one time I wasn’t.
I was sacrificing sleep and my health because I was getting 6 hours of sleep or less during the week.
Although I was getting more on the weekends it was nearly doing me in during the week.
BTW, research says if you are only were getting 6 hours of sleep each night for 14 days it amounts to 2 nights of total sleep deprivation!
It affects your mental capacity & health, including weight, blood pressure, diabetes. other chronic illness & increased cancer risk +++ it makes you age prematurely!
I was driving 30 minutes to & from work each weekday. My lack of sleep caught up with me. I was having trouble staying awake on my afternoon drive. I caught myself almost nodding off a few times. It was scary!
I had to call someone to talk to so I wouldn’t go to sleep or grab a soda to stay awake.
I tried to get in bed earlier but it was hard to turn my mind off…I was stressed out ! Every last cell in my body was exhausted!
A well-meaning friend even told me how tired I looked.
Finally I developed a nighttime routine to help me unwind and power down before bed.
I had to take a few minutes just for myself even though that meant that something might not get done until the morning.
I made myself relax, using a face mask and soaking in the tub for at least 5 minutes (or more if I would allow myself). Then I took control of my thoughts and zoned out.
As I got into bed, I found a comfortable position and started breathing deeply , getting into a rhythm. I focused my brain on my breathing, not allowing anything else to take up space in my brain. In a few minutes I’d be asleep.
Those few minutes helped me to sleep better because quality sleep is as important as quantity.
Please don’t allow your work or anything else to rob you of the rest you need to stay healthy and be able to function! Your health is worth some downtime each night.
Girls, we sometimes try to be like Super Woman and DO EVERYTHING for others and I get it !! I love doing for others. I just LOVE DOING period BUT I’m not going to sacrifice my health.
Something I learned when I was teaching is that children/people are better off if you teach them to do something for themselves rather than doing it for them. It’s like that old saying goes, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach him how to fish, you feed him for life.”
MOMS, listen to that truth.
Children need to learn how to pick up after themselves, wash clothes, clean the house, even cook. Everyone needs to learn how to be self-sufficient and how to contribute within their family and the community at large. Do you want your kids to grow up without knowing how to do these things?
So what if they don’t fold the towels as neatly as you do? Is someone going to think less of them or you?
MOM, take some time for yourself. Take care of yourself. Make it your goal to aim for at least 7 hours of sleep.
You’ve got a lot of people who want you to be around.
